Sub-Saharan Africa - Burkina Faso

2015-2019 | Global Affairs Canada (GAC), Iamgold, One Drop Foundation | CAD 17M

The Water and Sustainable Economic Growth in the Sahel (ECED- Sahel) was a four-year multi-sectoral program in agriculture, water and sanitation undertaken in collaboration with Global Affairs Canada, IAMGOLD, One Drop Foundation and the Ministry of Water and Sanitation. The project supported resilient economic growth in the region by achieving the following objectives: (1) Improving local livelihoods by supporting agricultural and livestock production for local producers and women’s groups; (2) Improving water supply and sanitation coverage through the construction of a drinking water treatment plant and sanitation and hygiene promotion activities; and (3) Reinforcing inclusive local governance to support economic development, water and sanitation service delivery, and promote women’s decision making in water management. At project end, over 60,000 people benefitted from improved access to drinking water supply, and more than 1 320 households have access to sanitation infrastructure. Under the livelihoods component, more than 100 farmer organizations in 20 communities, directly benefitted over 350 households from the technical assistance to improve their livelihood activities. Women benefitted from increased revenues, employment opportunities, and access to services, while also playing an increasing role in water management committees and commune level decision-making.
